On September 26th, the Ontario Chapter held an Annual Show with divisions for Potted Plants, Topiary, Miscellaneous Exhibits and Floral Design. This year the show surpassed all previous ones with 82 entries of excellent quality that were unique and very popular.

Special thanks to Dorothea Thompson, Chair and Vodrie McQuat, Co-Chair for orchestrating such a fantastic show. Many members performed more than one task and putting it together required many hours of preparation and thought. The creativity in the new classes made the show sensational and one of our best ever!

The quality of the Hedera helix classes was exceptional which is a testament to the diligent work our members have learned over the years as to how to care for and maintain their treasured ivies. The terrarium class was new and very successful with many entries. Barbara Furlong held a workshop in August on terrariums which encouraged many members to be creative with the smaller scale challenge of miniature ivies and others. The unique terrariums and the interesting selection of plants made this a fascinating class to view.

The Floral Design classes were no exception to creative new ideas for incorporating Hedera helix in designs with flowers. Class 11 – A Fascinator was very popular and lots of fun especially just following the royal wedding. Undoubtedly the Royals will be contacting us for new creative designs for these chic, fashionable hats! Veggie Visions – a design in a vegetable had many interesting entries as did The Sky’s the Limit – a design to include grasses. Early Fall was magnificent with many autumnal flowers in all their glory! See photos for some of the winning entries.

The day was enjoyed by all - We welcomed autumn enjoying beautiful exhibits of Hedera helix, visiting old and new friends and shared a delicious luncheon together.

Holiday Workshop

Dressing our homes for the holidays is so much fun; thus, a workshop to arrange live seasonal boughs and flowers in a mercury silver vintage container was enjoyed by all. Barbara Furlong, ON Chapter president, led the workshop which included assembling a wonderful assortment of Hedera helix, cedar, pine, variegated selenico, ruscus, juniper and the new and trendy green furry chrysanthemums. Beautiful ribbons, silver and red wire balls were available at the Ways and Means table for purchase. After the workshop, a delicious tea was served celebrating a most enjoyable day for members and their guests.
