The American Ivy Society Ontario Chapter Annual Show, Toronto October, 2009
By Dorothea Thompson, Chair
Once again the Toronto Chapter’s Annual Show was held in the fall and , after a cool, wet summer , the ivies that had been outside for a few months were lush and pristine. Some of the plants had been tenderly cared for indoors and they were also in excellent condition.
The Schedule was divided into four sections : Potted Plants – 4 classes, Topiary – 2 classes, Miscellaneous – 4 classes including cut specimens, a Planter class and a Basket with 3 or more cultivars (could be newly acquired). The Floral Design Section had 4 classes : Tea For Two, a design in two containers ; Dinner Party, a design with one or more candles; Birthday Party, a design; and Garden Party, a hat decorated with fresh or dried flowers. This last class was very popular with our members and attracted lots of entries. The hats were staged on topiary frames and were colourful, fun and whimsical.
We had three judges, two for the horticulture section (plus two student judges)and one for the design section. They judged 77 entries and after lunch were introduced to the members and asked to comment on the show. Their remarks were educational and complimentary.
The awards this year were china cups and saucers with an ivy design. There was an award for each class. Judge’s Choice Awards was given in both horticulture and design and those prizes were beautiful pieces of china. The best entry in the show went to Dorothy Lloyd for her ivy topiary with thyme that won the silver compote. More photos from the Annual show can be seen at www.ivy.org/chapternews.com.
